Welcome. Sinsetsu Studio is culmination of many years of dedication and training in the art of Shodo, Japanese Calligraphy by Master Calligrapher and artist, Mako. In the pursuit of a true art form, where art meets spirituality, she has been practicing the art of Shodo, and its spiritual expression, Zen calligraphy for over 25 years. Japanese calligraphy to the common eye may seem uncomplicated or even bland. However, the creation of such a simplistic piece involves the knowledge of several difficult skills, and the mastery of all the elements of art, specifically line, shape and space.
Mako
Born in the city of Nagoya, Japan, she began the study of Shodo at the age of 7 by entering a private supplementary school as a gift from her parents. Throughout her younger years, she has collected many prizes in art competitions and was featured in many art galleries throughout Japan.

Upon graduation from high school, Mako was invited by her master to teach in the very school she began studying in, passing on the time honored tradition of Japanese Calligraphy.

All of the work you see here is completely original, made by Mako in her studio in Hawaii. Mako moved to Hawaii from Japan in 1990. Originally on vacation, like many others who come to visit, her short stay here in the islands eventually turned into her new home.

As you may or may not know, Hawaii is a very spiritual place. Truly skillful Zen calligraphy is not the product of intense “practice”; rather, it is best achieved as the product of the “Mushin” or “no-mind” state, a high level of spirituality, and a heart free of disturbances. Hawaii truly is the perfect place to free his/her mind and heart of disturbances and focus only on the meaning of the character that is being written.

It has always been my wish to bring the world closer to the beauty and spiritual power of Japanese Calligraphy and the philosophy behind Zen Calligraphy, essentially, becoming one with what you create. Let me introduce you to the way I practice and experience Shodo and show you why it is an unceasing source of inspiration in my life.
